Aromatherapy
The aromatic extracts
from trees, flowers, grasses, herbs, fruits, leaves, roots, and shrubs are obtained by various methods including steam distillation, expression, enfleurage, maceration, and solvent extraction.
The nostrils are attached to a part of the brain called the limbic system. The limbic system controls emotions and influences the nervous system and hormones. When we inhale essential oil molecules, the chemical constituents act as messages which are transmitted to the limbic system and affect heart rate, stress level, blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion, and the immune system. Essential oils are also absorbed through the skin.
Aromatherapy massage is particularly suited to conditions involving stress, pain or improving emotionally-related conditions. Our skin is somewhat permeable. The natural active chemical constituents in essential oils (esters, terpenes, ketones etc.) are absorbed into the blood stream when applied topically just like any chemical substances in pharmaceuticals such as hormone replacement therapy cream and nicotine patches.
