Deep Tissue
What are Knots?
When there is muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesion's or what many people refer to as "knots" (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscle, tendon, and/or ligaments. Adhesion's can also be caused by lack of nutrient rich oxygenated blood due to shallow breathing, smoking, a poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption, drug use (including prescription medications), lack of water and/or general stress. Adhesion's can block circulation, be painful, limit movement, and/or cause inflammation.
What to Expect
Deep tissue massage uses direct deep pressure and other techniques including friction with the intention of physically separating congested tissue fibers to relieve pain and restore normal movement. Deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as:
Painful?
Deep tissue massage can cause some discomfort for some people. The amount of pressure I use is determined by you, the client. It seems there are 2 schools of thought on how much pressure is required for effectiveness. I disagree with "No pain - No Gain." My experience is if you go deeper than "it hurts good" and into "only pain" territory, the treatment often becomes counter-productive.
That being said, on occasion it may be in your best interest to go a tiny bit deeper than your comfort zone. In this case, you will be guided to talk a long deep breath with a slow exhale as doing so can help you release and/or let go physically, emotionally and sometimes even subconsciously. Occasionally their is a little soreness the next day (usually only those who do not get regular massage treatments), but it almost always subsides within a one or two days. ~My aim is you leave feeling relieved, relaxed & rejuvenated!
